Things to Do Near Hagley Road, Birmingham

Hagley Road is one of the nicer addresses in Birmingham. It runs from the smart suburb of Edgbaston straight into the city centre, and you can be in the middle of town in under 10 minutes. Our apartment here suits families, work trips and anyone who wants a bit more space than a hotel room. If you’re staying with us, here’s what’s worth doing while you’re in the area.

Top Local Attractions

Edgbaston Cricket Ground

The cricket ground is pretty much on your doorstep. It’s one of the best Test venues in the country, and even when there’s no match on you can book a stadium tour. If you’re into your cricket, try to catch a game while you’re here. The atmosphere on a match day is hard to beat.

Local tip: walk or get a taxi if there’s a game on. Parking around the ground fills up fast.

Edgbaston Reservoir

A lot of people don’t know this is here, which is part of the charm. It’s a few minutes’ walk from the apartment and makes for a lovely quiet stroll, a morning run or a bit of birdwatching. The views across the water are genuinely lovely, especially early in the day.

Local tip: get there for sunrise if you can. It’s worth the early alarm.

Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Fifteen acres of gardens in the middle of Edgbaston, with Victorian glasshouses, peacocks wandering about, a bandstand and lovely planting through the seasons. It doesn’t cost much to get in and it’s a nice way to spend an afternoon, whether you’ve got kids with you or just fancy some peace and quiet.

Local tip: there’s a good cafe inside if you want lunch or a cup of tea.

Barber Institute of Fine Arts

This little gallery sits on the University of Birmingham campus and it’s free to walk in. Don’t let the size fool you. You’ll find work by Monet, Degas, Rubens and Rembrandt inside. It’s one of those places that surprises people.

Birmingham City Centre, 10 Minutes Away

Grand Central and the Bullring

The city centre is one of the best places to shop in the country. Grand Central sits above New Street station with over 60 shops, and the Bullring next door has the famous Selfridges building along with pretty much every high street name you can think of.

Local tip: the 9 and 10 buses go straight into town from Hagley Road, so you can leave the car at the apartment.

Brindleyplace and Gas Street Basin

Birmingham’s canal quarter is a great spot for an evening out. There are more miles of canal here than in Venice, and the towpaths are lined with bars, restaurants and places to eat. Symphony Hall is close by too if you fancy a show.

Where to Eat and Drink

Hagley Road and Harborne Village

Hagley Road has a good run of restaurants, from proper Indian places to Italian and Mediterranean. Five minutes down the road, Harborne is the pick of the area for eating out, with wine bars, independent restaurants and a few good gastropubs.

Local tip: Lasan in the city centre does an award-winning curry, and The High Field in Edgbaston is great for a relaxed meal.
